Let's Talk Nutrition

A few natural points to ponder.......

Dogs are omnivores (a diet consisiting of mainly meats and vegetables) cats are carnivores ( a diet consisting mainly of meats). No where in these definitions does the word grain appear yet almost all commercial pet foods consist mainly of grains not meats. A diet with a little bit of grain can be o.k but when the majority becomes more grain than meat we now have a diet that has veared from it's evolutionary model.

What happens when a diet goes off course from it's appropriate model? Cells change. They have to , they are no longer being "fed" what they need to grow and replicate. When cells change they become new cells, cells that can become cancer cells. As they body is trying to fight off disease these new cells are not as equipped for the fight so the body tries to "get rid" of whatever it can so the cells can do their job better. This is usually seen as skin conditions, the bodies way of purging what it nutritionally can't use. Because our pets diets have been altered so far away from the original diet we are seeing more and more skin/ allergy conditions and an alarming trend in cancers.

How should you feed your pet? Well there are many ways so you can decide what works best for you and your pet;

Commercial diets (dry food/kibble)
If you choose this method try to find a food that has 2 different proteins as the first two ingredients. For example: Chicken and turkey meal.This will eliminate almost all store and veterinary brands.

Home cooking for your pet
Don't doubt it your parents and grandparents fed this way. Until 1960 there was no commercial pet food so pets ate whatever the family ate and they were healthier for it!

Raw food
This is the most evolutionary appropriate diet for animals and yes pets. Animals have existed for thousands of years. Their bodies are designed with short intestines and a very acidic pH perfect for breaking down raw foods without incidence of disease. That is why your dog can dig up a bone he buried months ago , eat it and not get sick. When they kill a bird or squirrel they aren't cooking it! So as you can see you don't have to feel dependent upon "dog or cat food".
